Transportation
Transportation is a prioritized need in rural and isolated areas of Northeast Oklahoma. All seven counties of Northeast Oklahoma have some form of transportation, but it is predominately provided in the larger communities. Inability to access transportation impairs older persons’ ability to shop for groceries and prescriptions, access congregate meal sites and access doctor appointments. It limits their socialization with family and friends and increases an older person’s inability to remain in their home. Although transportation is necessary to access congregate meal services, most senior centers do not have transportation available, especially in the rural, isolated communities because service provision is too expensive due to increased miles, increased drive time and reduced number of riders. This service is provided by Older Americans Act federal/state funds, Title III, by two service providers in Northeast Oklahoma.
